With all the news coverage and hype about this Manchester derby, I had really high expectations on United. I thought – and I think must United fans did – that the Red Devils would honor the Busby Babes on the pitch today by getting revenge from the last derby defeat.
What the team did I must say was something of the opposite. This was one of the worst and most uninspiring performances from the United squad this season. All of the players under-performed and what stunned me the most was that the players didn’t show any fighting spirit. I don’t know if it was because the pressure has been to strong on them – people required a expected a win against the rivals and that they would win for the honor of the players who were killed in the Munich air crash in 1958. Possibly the international games during midweek had some impact aswell but I think that’s no excuse.
There were so many bad passes today and the slow pace of the attacks made it easy for City to defend. Sven-Göran Eriksson showed his tactical knowledge today and another excellent game from the central defenders Richard Dunne and Micah Richards were the main success factors behind City’s win at Old Trafford – Uniteds first loss of the season on home soil. United must now quickly forget about this sad day and focus on the next game against Arsenal and get back on a winning streak.
Chelsea only drew at home today against Liverpool leaving them three points behind United. Today’s loss means that Arsenal has the opportunity to increase the gap to United to five points when Blackburn visits Emirates Stadium tomorrow.
